Visit Seville – The Alcazar

Next stop on my sightseeing tour of Seville is the Alcázares Reales de Sevilla, or simply Alcázar as it is more commonly known.

If you are visiting Seville, a visit to the Royal Alcázars of Seville is an absolute must! One of Seville’s key historical architectural attractions, it is a registered UNESCO World Heritage site along with the Seville Cathedral and Archive of the Indies.

Throughout the centuries the Alcázar has served as a palace for the various ruling parties of the time, with each leaving their unique stamp, resulting in a stunning fusion of Moorish, Gothic, Mudéjar, and Renaissance architecture.

The royal apartments on the upper floors of the palace are still used by the Spanish royal family as their official residence in Seville, making it the oldest royal place still in use in Europe.

Your visit will take you through magnificent salons with exquisite tiled walls and intricate plasterwork, delightful courtyards, and extensive gardens. Don’t be surprised if you come across a peacock or two, while strolling through the gardens!

Fun Fact: If you are a fan of the Games of Thrones you may parts of the Alcázar may look familiar to you. In season five Game of Thrones was filmed in four parts of the Alcázar: the Ambassadors’ Hall, Mercury’s Pool, the Baths of Maria de Padilla, and the gardens.

Scenes from the historical movies “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Kingdom of Heaven” were also filmed in the Alcázar.
