Visit Seville – Seville Cathedral
I’m just back from 6 weeks in Spain and Portugal and excited to share some photos from my trip!
I begin with the beautiful city of Seville. Seville (or Sevilla in Spanish) has something for everyone. From great Moorish and Catholic monuments, a large and enchanting historic centre, with narrow and winding streets to explore, flamenco dancing, and of course amazing tapas!
One of the “must see” sites in Seville is the Catedral de Santa María de la Sede, or Seville Cathedral. It’s sheer size amazes! It is the largest gothic style church in the world, and the 3rd largest in size after St. Peter’s Basilica of the Vatican in Rome, and St. Paul in London. In 1987 UNESCO declared it a world heritage site along with the Alcázar palace and the General Archive of the Indies.
The Cathedral stands on the site of a Moorish Mosque built by the Almohads. All that remains of the original Mosque today is part of its minaret, which is now the cathedral’s Giralda bell tower. During your visit you can climb the 104-metre tower and enjoy a nice view of the city centre.
The Cathedral took over 100 years to build and houses 80 chapels and contains the longest central nave in Spain.
Speaking of views of the city, if you have time, I recommend taking Cathedral Roof Tour. You will learn so many interesting details about the construction of the cathedral and the many people involved, all while enjoying spectacular panoramic views of beautiful Seville.
