Porto, Portugal

Porto, Portugal

I’m feeling a bit nostalgic today, this time last year Rod and I had just started our trip to Portugal, 1st stop the picturesque city of Porto.

If you haven’t been, I hope my photos and descriptions will inspire you to add it to your bucket list. Pack comfortable shoes as it is hilly, with lots of cobblestone streets to explore!

Things to do and see

Stroll through the winding medieval streets and charming cobblestone alleyways in the Praça de Ribiera to the river front of the Rio Duoro.  Take in the spectacular views of the traditional Rabelo boats and the iconic Dom Luis iron bridge. In the warmer months, you likely will see young kids jumping from the lower level to the river below.

Cross the bridge to Porto’s sister city Gaia and take a tour at one of the famous Port wine cellars.

Visit the beautiful Livraria Lello one of the oldest bookstores in Portugal.  It’s fabulous red staircase is said to have inspire the one in Hogwarts, from the Harry Potter books.

Take a ride on one of the historic trams (Electrico in Portuguese). The trams retain their original polished wood interiors, brass controls and dials, and a clanging bell to stop the tram. The Linha 1 tram line is the most scenic route, it follows the banks of the Douro River to the Foz district.

Head a few short kilometres to Matosinhos to dine on fish and seafood straight from the ocean. Try the traditional grilled sardines, or maybe some clams, goose barnacles, shrimp or lobster. All unbelievably fresh and tasty, perfect paired with some vinho verde.

Book a small group wine tour in the Duoro Valley.  Be sure to book one with an option of a Douro River rabelo boat tour. Worth it for the unbelievable scenic views from the river.

And of course you can’t leave Porto without trying a francesinha.  Visit A Regaleira’s where the original francesinha recipe was created.
